Forged AI Crawlers: Brand-Trust Abuse as a Credential Reconnaissance Vector
Analysis of GreyNoise telemetry on scanners impersonating OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek and Perplexity crawlers to locate exposed secrets
A threat analysis of the forged-AI-crawler campaign documented by GreyNoise: impersonation mechanics, targeted artifacts, discriminators separating genuine from spoofed crawlers, and detection and hardening guidance for web and cloud operators.

1. Background
As generative-AI search and assistants became mainstream, site operators began explicitly permitting AI crawlers — to gain visibility in AI-generated answers or simply to reduce false-positive blocking. That permissiveness created a new trust surface. GreyNoise's research, published 28 August 2026 and syndicated through 1 September, shows threat actors exploiting it.
2. Campaign Mechanics
2.1 Impersonation
Scanners present user-agent strings mimicking GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot (Anthropic), DeepSeek, Google's AI crawlers, PerplexityBot and related agents.
2.2 Targeted Artifacts
Requests focus on secret-bearing paths rather than indexable content:
.envand environment configuration files- AWS credential and config files
- Private keys and certificates (
.pem,.key) - Version-control metadata (
.git/) - Configuration and database backups
2.3 Discriminators
GreyNoise telemetry identifies reliable tells:
| Property | Legitimate AI crawler | Forged scanner | |---|---|---| | Source IP | Within vendor-published ranges | Outside published ranges | | robots.txt | Honored | Largely ignored | | Request targets | Indexable content | Secret-bearing paths | | Rate pattern | Polite, distributed | Opportunistic, path-enumerating |
3. Classification
FACT — direct telemetry observation. Severity 1: the campaign is reconnaissance for credential exposure and does not compromise AI systems. Its significance lies in scale and in the erosion of a trust heuristic many defenders adopted uncritically.
4. Impact Analysis
Exposed .env and cloud credential files are among the most common root causes of cloud account takeover, cryptomining abuse and data theft. By riding allow-listed identities, forged crawlers reduce the probability of being rate-limited or blocked before locating a misconfigured host. The downstream impact is therefore not the scan itself but the accelerated discovery of already-exposed secrets.
5. Detection and Hardening
Detection
- Compare claimed AI-crawler traffic against vendor-published IP ranges; alert on mismatches.
- Flag any request for secret-bearing paths regardless of user-agent.
- Correlate robots.txt violations with AI-crawler user-agents.
Hardening
- Deny
/.env,/.aws/,/.git/,*.pem,*.keyand backup extensions at the edge. - Audit web roots and object storage for deployed secrets; rotate on discovery.
- Move secrets to managed secret stores; never ship them in web-served directories.
Intelligence Use
- Convert forged-crawler fingerprints into WAF rules and honeypot lures; the traffic is consistent and high-volume.
6. Assessment
Encrygma assesses with high confidence that impersonation of AI-vendor infrastructure will broaden beyond crawlers to include spoofed API callbacks, webhook sources and agent identities as organizations extend trust to AI services. Verification by cryptographic or network-origin means — not by declared identity — should be treated as a baseline control.
